LAD #3 Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was written because the Colonists were fed up the Great Britain as they thought the government was not doing their job as being the defender of the people's rights. The colonists were influenced heavily by enlightened type of thinking, and had strong democratic ideals. They stated in the document that god gives all men the rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and since government gets its power from the people, if they don't protect the peoples' rights then its the peoples obligation to stand up to the government. This is how the colonists saw themselves when they started the revolution. There were a long list of grievances that the colonists saw as the king breaking the peoples' democratic rights. Most grievances had to do with the king acting on his own accord, imposing laws without the colonists consent. Some examples they listed were him imposing heavy taxes on the colonists, allowing the quartering of troops, and several grievances that dealt with him not allowing a fair judiciary system for the colonists. Overall, they thought many actions of the British government and of the king in particular were very tyrant like. For those reasons they had, in their mind, consistently given the British fair warnings for them to change their behavior towards the colonies. However, after not meeting their demands the colonies thought it was in their right under their god to declare themselves free and independent states, no longer tied to their Mother country.
Texas thinks of themselves as independent and tries to succeed from the union every year with 0 success
