On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation which freed all the slaves in the USA, including the confederate states. The army and the federal government were required to recognize and maintain the freedom of slaves, and were not permitted to repress them. Lincoln couldnt actually outlaw slavery, or make the freedmen citizens of the US. He also said that he wouldnt suppress the rebellion in the south as commander in chief. He wanted the freedmen to not engage in any violence, except self-defense.
On VE day when the US and other allied powers liberated areas the jews imprisoned would be freed, similar to how the US troops would have to beat the southerners in order for the slaves to be liberated
